Countdown to candy: Memphis sweets shops brace for Halloween demand
Meanwhile in Whitehaven, the Macklin family is busy keeping their candy store well stocked for customers this Halloween season.
Macklin Candy Co. at 451 E. Shelby Drive has been operating since 1992, when it was established by Samuel Macklin Sr. He and his wife Jacqueline remain involved, but their son Sam Macklin Jr. and daughter Jashundra Macklin do most of the heavy lifting nowadays.
“I grew up working in this store; I’ve been here since I was a child,” Sam Macklin Jr. said.
Macklin Candy Co. also sells dog supplies and has a small kitchen with cold cuts and made-to-order sandwiches. But sweet treats remains the bulk of its business.
Sam Macklin Jr. has been keeping the shelves stocked with popular classic candies like Long Boys (chewy caramel coconut sweets) and Chic-O Sticks (peanut butter sticks dusted with ground coconut).
